In The Media

On Tuesday 3rd June 2008 I had the privilege to conduct the first official marriage ceremony with BridgeClimb Sydney for Scottish couple Steven and Claire at the summit of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Steven and Claire contacted me in February this year via my website to ask if I would officiate at their ceremony in the clouds. Of course I readily agreed - not only to be part of their special day but to be part of history!

As with all couples from overseas that I assist, I provided Steven and Claire via email with clear details on filling in the Notice of Intended Marriage along with sample ceremonies that assisted us in creating a special ceremony that suited their style and personality.

I met with the couple the day before the ceremony to sight their required identification, to run through the ceremony and conduct a rehearsal (on the ground!) so that they both knew what to expect at the summit. Steven and Claire felt very calm and confident.

After meeting at the BridgeClimb headquarters at 6.30am that morning, we donned the mandatory outfits and made our way onto the bridge. The very foggy start to the morning didn’t daunt the bride and groom who are used to this type of weather in their home town of Glasgow.

At the summit an array of photo journalists and news crews greeted us, along with the groom’s sister, partner and cousin who flew to Sydney from Scotland to surprise them. The ceremony commenced just as the fog started to roll away, revealing the Harbour, city skyline and our other famous icon – the Opera House.

After exchanging rings they sealed their union with a kiss. We spent time with the journalists and admiring the view before making our way back. Official documents were signed at the ANA Hotel and the newlyweds were left to enjoy their afternoon in Sydney before flying out the following day to North Queensland – and to warm, sunny weather!

The Attorney General's Office is responsible for Marriage Celebrants in Australia and I was pleased to have received a letter from the former Attorney General, The Honourable Philip Ruddock, the sitting Federal Member for Berowra, with his good wishes.
